Board of Directors for the Marco Island Academy (MIA)
Mrs. Jane Watt graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She majored in Zoology and minored in Spanish. She spent a summer studying Spanish at La Universidad De Las Americas in Puebla, Mexico.
After graduation, Mrs. Watt worked as a pharmaceutical sales specialty representative for Eli Lilly and Company for four years. Then she served as a District Manager for a title company in Cleveland for five years. Thirteen years ago, she decided to leave her career to raise her family. She is passionate about improving education on a local level and hopes it will inspire others to make a difference in their community. She is the visionary for the Marco Island Academy, a public charter high school and began developing a plan for the school in January, 2009. She is a founding board member of the Marco Island Discovery Center, which is the fundraising entity for the Marco Island Academy. She has been serving on the board since its inception on July, 2009. In the spring of 2012, she received the Rotary "Spirit of Marco Island" Award. In the fall of 2012, she received the "Champion Governing Board Member" Award from The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools.
Mrs. Vergo attended ITI in Tampa, FL. She is extremely organized and has an extensive background in administrative services. She worked at Quail Creek Country Club for nine years.
Mrs. Vergo consistently demonstrates her commitment to volunteer work in the Marco Island Community. She has volunteered countless hours at Tommie Barfield Elementary, the American Cancer Society, and the Marco Island Academy. At the Marco Island Academy, she helps coordinate all fundraising events and works closely with the parent and community volunteers. Mrs. Vergo joined the Marco Island Academy's Board of Directors in August, 2011.
Rene Champagne, Treasurer
Rene Champagne is the retired former Chairman and CEO of ITT Educational Services, Inc. A private sector college system providing technology-focused degree programs of study to thousands of students in more than 35 states. Upon his retirement he joined the board of directors of the non-profit Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities serving as Chairman for several years. Mr. Champagne served as a Naval officer during the Viet Nam War following his graduation from the University of Connecticut.
Dianne Wetjen, Secretary
Dianne Wetjen graduated summa cum laude from Allegheny College in the field of education. She holds a Master's Degree from Florida State University and many hours of post- graduate work at Long Island University. She worked as a reading consultant for 24 years. She was appointed as Project Director of a New York State Education dissemination grant called project CHILD for four years. She is a national and international speaker on the relationship between reading, math and writing. She and her husband have a son, Eric Wetjen Ph.D and a grandson, Kyle. Upon retirement to Marco Island, she has been president of several local organizations, including Newcomers Club, Friends of the Library and AAUW. She worked with the Marco Charter Middle School for eight years and served as Secretary of the Board for four of those years. She has been serving on the Marco Island Discovery Center board since October, 2009.
Kimberly Barry, Director of Enrollment
Kimberly Barry graduated with an Associate in Science Degree and a Bachelor in Pharmacy Degree from Ferris State University in Michigan. She then attended the University of Maryland where she earned her Doctorate in Pharmacy Degree. She was the Valedictorian of her class at both Ferris State University and the University of Maryland. During her studies, Kim earned numerous awards including, but not limited to, Who's Who in American Colleges of Pharmacy, National Association of Chain Drug Stores Award, Kenneth Spoerk Biology Award and the Hook's Drug Scholarship. In addition, she received 2 years of specialized clinical training from Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Kim and her husband, Travis, have lived on Marco Island for the past 16 years. They both have been active volunteers with the Marco Island Academy project since 2009. They have two children, ages eight and six, who attend Tommie Barfield Elementary. Kim has been an active volunteer at Tommie Barfield Elementary for the past 3 years. She is also working as a Pharmacist on Marco Island. She joined the Marco Island Academy Board in March, 2011.
Jennifer Macko, Director
Jennifer Macko graduated from Bryant University in Smithfield, RI with a bachelors degree in business administration. Upon moving to Marco Island 13 years ago, she began working for Citizens Community Bank as a customer service representative, later being promoted to Chairman's Club Representative. She handled all of the banks largest accounts, planned events and coordinated the use of the community room. She later earned her series 6 and 63 licenses which allowed her to offer mutual funds and annuities to her bank customers. She continued to work for CCB which later became First National Bank of Florida until the birth of her first son. She is married to Steve Macko and is raising their 2 boys. Her youngest son has just entered kindergarten and her older son is a third grader at Tommie Barfield Elementary. She is currently starting her own business, "Just Ask Jen." It is a concierge and organizing service. Jen has been volunteering for various fundraising events at Marco Island Academy for the past year. Now she is serving as a Co-Chair on the Campaign for the new campus. She joined the Marco Island Academy Board of Directors in September, 2012.
Frank Recker, Director
Frank Recker graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati with a BS degree in 1967; he subsequently graduated from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry in Cincinnati, Ohio. After attending law school in the evenings, he left the clinical practice of dentistry and began the practice of law, representing dentists and dental organizations throughout the United States. He currently maintains a full time law practice and travels frequently on client matters. He is licensed as a dentist and an attorney in Ohio and Florida. He served on the City Council of Marco Island from 2008-2012, and has resided on Marco Island since 1997.
McKinsey Elliott, Asst. Director of Grants
McKinsey Elliott attended Marymount University where she majored in Elementary Education and has since taken numerous continuing education courses in Early Childhood Education. Ms. Elliott worked extensively designing and implementing children's Recreational Programs prior to her focusing on Pre-School age children. McKinsey moved to Marco Island where she met her husband Frank eight years ago. Currently they both teach in their family-owned Stars and Stripes Early Learning Center on Marco island. McKinsey and Frank have two children, ages 7 and 6, within Tommie Barfield and one, age 3, within their own school. Ms. Elliott has worked behind the scenes performing invaluable research for grants for the Marco Island Academy since August 2010. She joined the Board of the Marco Island Discovery Center in August 2011
